I don't think it will make much difference at this point, but I'm actually angry enough that I bothered to drop her a line and let her know that I think our ELECTED MPs should be given the opportunity to make a vote of non-confidence and/or a coalition, regardless of the personal feelings of our UNELECTED Prime Minister.

| Proportional representation |
[Oct. 13th, 2008|08:21 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | busy | ] | I have just learned some good news for my B.C. peeps - B.C. is set to have another referendum on proportional representation in 2009, as the 2005 vote was only 2% shy of passing. (58% when a 60% majority was required for a win - ironic in light of the fact a 40% win is usually more than enough to take parliament. >.< )
More about B.C.'s upcoming referendum here: http://www.stv.ca/join
For the rest of Canada, FairVote Canada is running "the Great Democracy Disaster Contest", where the person who guesses a number closest to the number of votes that won't count in their riding wins.
In Canada's last election, more than 7 million votes were cast that didn't actually elect anybody. It will be interesting to see what the numbers are for this one.
I'm really hoping B.C.'s next referendum passes, because once one province has it, it'll be a lot easier for the others to swing it, I think. |

| The ABC vote |

| | satisfied | ] | I've been hearing some good stuff about the NDP lately, and was feeling a bit torn about my vote. Fortunately, found this good site, which basically says I might as well vote Liberal for my riding anyways. My concience is clear. *L*
http://www.voteforenvironment.ca/
I like the idea of a systematic ABC vote this time since I'd pretty much be happy with any of the NDP, Greens, or Liberals getting in, esp. as they seem to all be more or less on the same page about the issues I care the most about.
In related news, a bunch of Canadians including Ed from BNL did a little enviro music video. I like the trees going in reverse:

Avaaz is actually a really cool group over all. |

| If Harper gets a majority government, I'm going to cry. |

| | angry | ] | Election has been called for October 14: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/reuters/080907/n_canada_reuters/canada_politics_can_col
I'm going to be voting Liberal this time around, mostly because I think Dion is brilliant for making ecological tax shifting the core of his platform. It's a brave, beautiful, revenue-neutral move by the Liberals and I am happy to support them.
Basic concept: - Tax people for doing things you don't want them to do (pollute!), not things you WANT them to do (be productive! e.g., HAVE INCOME)
Regular income tax is ridiculous, even from a Conservative perspective. It penalizes people for working hard and doing well - the better your ideas, inventions, leadership, whatever, the more taxes you pay.
Harper's ads amaze me, because they refuse - as a matter of pride - to recognize a BRILLIANT economic strategy that is CONSERVATIVE at its core, just so his party (which apparently DOESN'T EVEN UNDERSTAND ECONOMICS) can get more seats.
Dion should win on this one, hands down. I can't remember the last time I saw a leader propose something both RADICAL and GOOD. I feel the need to advocate on his party's behalf, but I don't know how. My family is small and most of my friends left-wing and prone to making informed decisions. I'm thinking lots of letters to the editor, but bloody heck, I don't have much time.
(Which, of course, is why Harper is trying to call an election so soon - same as with propotional representation. Call the vote before people have time to become informed about an idea that is sure to win, and then it will be another couple of decades before anyone tries to run on that issue again).
AUGH! |
